Wilma Faye (Spear) Bogard was born February 26, 1936, at Middle Creek near Dustin in Hughes County, Oklahoma. She passed away on March 16, 2022, in McAlester, Oklahoma.
Wilma’s parents, Zack and Marie Spear moved the family to Hanna in 1938 when she was two years old. Wilma attended grade school at Oak Hill and high school at Hanna. During high school, Wilma met her husband of 55 years, J.C. Bogard. The two were married on July 5th, 1952.
J.C. was the son of a farmer, so J.C. and Wilma began their married life tending to crops and raising cattle. J.C. and Wilma had two sons, Joe Charles Jr. and Kevin. The entire family was involved in the farming operation and the daily chores that it involved.
When J.C. and the boys would be out working, Wilma was known to prepare for them her home cooked meals and some of the best fried potatoes you could find! She enjoyed being a homemaker, keeping records for the family farm, attending the Free Will Baptist Church in Hanna, and serving as the church secretary.
When Wilma wasn’t cooking or bookkeeping she could be found crocheting. Like her mother, Marie, who made beautiful quilts, Wilma was very talented in crocheting beautiful afghan’s, baby blankets, baby booties, bed spreads, and doilies. Wilma also had a love of music, including Elvis Presley and Loretta Lynn. One of the highlights of her life was visiting Graceland and Loretta Lynn’s home in Tennessee. Wilma developed an appetite for Collins Bakery Fruitcake and enjoyed it so much she could eat it year round.
Wilma and J.C. had married when she was 16 years old. Then in 2007, after J.C.’s death, Wilma found herself living alone for the first time. She could have seen this as a negative, but she didn’t. Instead, she was self-sufficient, enjoyed visiting with friends, and staying active in current events. Wilma lived within six miles of where she was raised her entire life until her health failed and she went to live at Mitchell Manor in McAlester, Oklahoma. Wilma made many friends in the seven years while at Mitchell Manor and enjoyed getting to know others. Wilma will be missed by her many friends including Phyllis Dodd who had become a very special friend during her time at Mitchell Manor.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, Zack and Marie Spear, and her husband J.C.
Survivors include two sons, Joe and wife Rebecca of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kevin and wife Sue of Hanna, Oklahoma, one sister, Pat Berry, and husband James also of Hanna, Oklahoma, and one brother-in-law Leon Bogard, and wife Jody of Coweta, Oklahoma.
