Billy Dewayne Stokes

Billy Dewayne Stokes, was born October 24, 1946, in Eureka, Kansas, and after a life rich with love and experiences, he passed away peacefully Sunday, March 10th in Dustin, Oklahoma.

Billy's journey in life was one of commitment and service. He was drafted in the United States Army and valiantly served his country during the Vietnam War. His patriotism continued through the years as he became the Commander of American Legion Post 144 in Dustin. His dedication to community shone brightly in his role on the Dustin Activities Council.

Apart from his service, Billy was an industrious individual who delved into various professions. He was a talented and self-employed plumber, truck driver, diesel mechanic, heavy equipment operator, and in lawn care. His strong work ethic and resourcefulness were traits that resonated with everyone who had the pleasure of working with him.

With a heart as expansive as the plains he grew up on, Billy found the love and partnership that dreams are made of with Cornelia Thomas. They united in marriage on March 18, 1973, and built a beautiful life together in the Dustin Community since 1980, encapsulating strength, devotion, and mutual respect. From the start of their relationship he was the love of Cornelia's life. Though thick and thin her love for Billy never waivered. Together, they raised a family that mirrored their values and love: children, Brandy Stokes, Jonathan Stokes, Tony Fish, and Sherry Scull. His legacy continued with the joyous sounds of grandchildren, Jett Lee Stokes and Jasper Ray Buchanan.

Billy's life was characterized by a strong connection to his family. He doted on his grandchildren, deriving great pleasure from their accomplishments and growth. Nothing compared to family gatherings where he was surrounded by the laughter and stories of his loved ones. Each moment was treasured and etched into the fabric of their memories.

The bonds of sibling love and camaraderie were also a large part of Billy's life. He was a brother to Delmer Lee (Pete) Stokes, Jr. and wife Jill, Theresa Hawkins, Mark Stokes, Edward Stokes, and wife Claudia. Each family occasion was amplified by their shared stories and the unique history that only siblings can truly appreciate. His parents, Delmer Lee Stokes, and Audra Leola (Hill) Stokes, preceded Billy in death, and the legacy of their nurturing is reflected in the family's closeness.

Billy's personal interests were a colorful tapestry that included watching his favorite shoot 'em up westerns, a genre that perhaps mirrored his own fearless and adventurous spirit. Gospel singing brought spiritual comfort and joy to his heart, uplifting his spirit through the harmonious melodies that he cherished.

Viewing for Billy will be 8:00 a.m., until 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 5th at Integrity Funeral Service.

Pallbearers will be, Jean Stokes, Zak Hawkins, Jimmy Buchanan, Darryll Quesenbury, George Howard and Rocky Kissee. Honorary pallbearers will be, Frank Elkins, Kenneth Hill, Rex Merchant, Tommy Sessions, Jim Guynes, Garry Harrison, Larry Bogle and Randy Bray.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 16th, 2024 at Dustin Cemetery with Rev. Bob Wingo and Rev. Don Johnson officiating. Services are under direction of Integrity Funeral Service.
