Mrs. Dicey Marie Barnett, 86, a resident of Henryetta, Oklahoma, passed away Sunday, September 22nd, 2024 at her home in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Dicey was born January 16th, 1938 in Henryetta, Oklahoma to Amy (Randall) and Rev. John Berryhill.
Dicey was preceded in death by spouse Edward Barnett, daughter Debbie Starr, granddaughter Shaunday Little and both her parents.
Dicey grew up in Henryetta, Oklahoma in the Wilson Community. Dicey was of the Skunk Clan and a member of the Kialegee Tribal Town.
Dicey moved to Bristow, Oklahoma in 1954 and graduated from Bristow High School. She moved to the Okmulgee area where she studied Legal Secretarial Science at Oklahoma State University and interned at the CourtHouse for Judge Monroney. She had returned back to the Wilson Community and was employed for 23 years beginning in 1975 with Muscogee Creek Nation where she also served as Secretary to Chief Claude Cox, 8 years with Thlopthlocco Tribal Town and continued on to be employed with the Mvskoke Food Sovereignty Initiative beginning in the year of 2007. She also served as secretary for the Wilson Indian Community for 20 years.
Dicey enjoyed listening to Creek Church songs, country music (Conway Twitty, George Jones and Hank Williams Jr.). She also had her two other favorites Elvis Presley and Tom Jones. She enjoyed walking, reading, riding her bike, gardening, cooking traditional dishes, sewing, preserving foods and raising chickens. In the evenings she liked to sit back and watch old westerns such as Gunsmoke and Thunder Basketball with her husband Ed Barnett. In her later years she enrolled herself and some family in pottery classes to share time with each other. She would also involve her family in learning beading, hand weaving and other crafts.
Dicey shared and taught the Mvskoke language to multiple family and friends. She was always willing to teach anyone that was willing to learn the language. She also attended Elder meetings that discussed old Mvskoke words. Dicey was especially proud of her role of grandmother, a main character in the short film "Spirits" by Kyle Bell. She also participated in Craft Services for the production of the movie "The Dawes Commission" as well as assisting with language translation and her great-granddaughter had a featured role. A life well and fully lived, Dicey was much loved and will be greatly missed.
