They briefly moved for a short time to California, were he worked in the grape vineyards. Rumor has it that he despised this job and not because of the grapes. It was the dreaded bees. People say you could see Don running by their windows as he was swatting vigorously at them and trying to escape their stings.
He owned and ran a cabinet shop for several years in Duncan, Oklahoma. They moved to Henryetta in 1967, when he taught vocational carpentry. He loved teaching all his students even the ones who would staple their friends to the roof of the new house the class was building. After teaching for ten years he started his carpentry business in Henryetta.
