Floyd Harper Friend

Floyd Harper Friend, a longtime resident of Henryetta was born May 21, 1926 to Charles Henry Friend and Willie Mae (Lumpkin) Friend. He attended Dewar High School and at the age of fifteen traveled to California and became a welder working on the Liberty Ships of WWII. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1944 and served with Company G, 108th Infantry regiment as a Private in Infantry Basic Training and as Pvt. Rifleman and PFC Field Lineman. He became Sergeant of communications and a Military Policeman, Occupied Territory. He later went to work for PPG Industries in Henryetta. After the closing of PPG in Henryetta, he and Doris moved to Marshall, Minnesota and later retired from PPG Industries. He had many occupations including painting. He painted boats, cars, tanks, locks and dams and also owned and operated Friend & Youngblood Boat Salvage Company. He also worked as an X-ray Technician on Pipeline. They made their home at Lake Eufaula and eventually retired and made their permanent home back in Henryetta. He is preceded in death by his wife Doris Mae Friend, his parents Charlie & WIllie Mae Friend, one brother, Earnie Friend, and two sisters, Jannie Bell Watteau and Mary Alice Walker. He is survived by four sisters: Patsy H. Spurlock & husband Billy of Henryetta; Ruth Ann Travis of Okemah; Dedee Morris & husband Lloyd of Denton, Texas; Donna Quick & husband Gary of Okmulgee; Several nieces & nephews which include Danne Spurlock & wife Linda of Henryetta, & Catherine Remer & husband Charles of Okmulgee. A host of friends and other relatives. Viewing will be Thursday from 5 - 8 pm and Friday 8am - 8pm. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Integrity Chapel with Randell & Diane Reader, officiating. Interment will be in Westlawn Cemetery under direction of Integrity Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Humphrey, Charles Remer, Bobby Claiborne, Jimmy Spurlock & Josh Remer. Honorary Pallbearers will Rusty Johnson, Everett Crandell, Mel Blondell, Ray Duca & Bill Robertson.
