Hazel L. Sorrels, a longtime Henryetta resident, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010 in Henryetta at the age of 78. Hazel was born on June 11, 1931 in Dustin, OK to John Dixon and Cassie (Mosely) Janeway. Hazel grew up and attended school in Hanna. She was married to Jearol Leroy Sorrels on December 12, 1950 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. She remained married to Jearol for 52 years until his death in 2002. Jearol and Hazel lived briefly in Indiana while Jearol worked for U.S. Steel, but returned home to Oklahoma by choice. Hazel was a member of the Ladies Auxillary for the VFW of Henryetta and was also a member of the American Legion. She loved to fish and loved attending garage sales. She was an especially good cook, and held dearly the special times she got to spend with her grandchildren and family. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Jearol; two daughters, Deborah Bunyard and Patricia Kathleen Sorrels; a brother, Wade Henry; 2 sisters, Blanche White and Gladys Martin; a grandson, Jearol Wayne Sorrels; and a great grandson, Rian Posey. She is survived by 2 daughters, Peggy Curtis of Muskogee and Claudeia Alexander and husband Kenny of Dewar; 2 sons, Richard Martin and wife Connie of Rhoadesville, VA and Jearol L. Sorrels, Jr. of Henryetta; 3 sisters, Wanda Grant of McAlester, Lorene Armer of McAlester, and Francis Blackburn of Oklahoma City; 12 grandchildren and 9 great Grandchildren; by special friends Shirley McKay of Henryetta, C.W. Gunkle of Schulter; and by a special daughter, Lynn Hutchens of Muskogee. Pallbearers will be Roger Sorrels, Ronnie Posey, Donnie Posey, Christopher Sorrels, Jearol Sorrels, Jr., and Doug Norris. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Dewar with Rev. Jack Vance officiating. Interment will follow immediately at Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta under the direction of Integrity Funeral Ser vice. Viewing will be held at the funeral home on Monday and Tuesday, May 17-18 from 8am to 8pm. The family has designated the Multiple Schlerosis Society, 733 Third Ave., New York, NY 10017 and/or March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, 1275 Mamaroneck Ave., New York, NY 10625 as appropriate for memorial contributions.
