Helen C. Burgess, a resident of Okmulgee, passed away Monday, July 9, 2018 in Tulsa, OK at the age of 76. She was born March 26, 1942 in Henryetta, OK to George C. "Mutt" Hogan & Eunice M. McCullah Hogan.
She was a writer and editor for the Muscogee Creek Nation Newspaper for many years.
She received the Woman of the Year award by the NFBPWC. She was appointed to the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women.
She was also appointed by Oklahoma Governor, Henry Bellmon to be a member on the State Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice.
Helen was invited and attended the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Burgess, parents, George C. "Mutt" Hogan and Eunice Roulston, daughter, Dana C. Bennett, and grandson, Brett Bible.
Helen is survived by her son, Sammy L. Bennett (Spike) of Okmulgee,
daughter, Leslie D. Cantrell of Okmulgee,
daughter, Sharalee Bible of Okmulgee,
son, Christopher Chalakee of Okmulgee,
10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren,
and 4 great-great grandchildren,
sister, Susan Bratt & husband Terry of Morris,
sister, Donna Hill & husband Mike of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma,
sister, Louann Roulston of Morris,
as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be from 10am-8pm on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Integrity Funeral Service.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, July 13, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Integrity Chapel. Interment will follow at Lackey Cemetery in Hitchita, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Integrity Funeral Service.
