Hellen Louise Logan Counterman Stubbs, was born in a tent near Seminole, Oklahoma on October 11, 1927. She was the twelfth child born to oil field worker, Charles Moss Logan and his wife, Millie Luella Bell Crabtree Logan. Hellen's mother, Mille, died three weeks later and Hellen's father, Charlie, an oil field worker, was unable to care for her. He agreed to allow Millie's cousin, Lela Counterman and her husband, John to take her to live with them in Henryetta, until he would be able to come and get her. Charlie died two years later and Hellen was unofficially adopted by John and Lela. A tomboy, Hellen was raised to hunt and fish and was nicknamed, "Mike" by her dad. She gave her heart to Jesus at an early age and literally grew up as part of the Henryetta First Church of the Nazarene. She was proud of the fact that they asked her to teach her first Sunday school class at age fourteen. She was a graduate of Henryetta High School, and worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone during her early adulthood. She married Lenard Ray Stubbs on January 27th, 1950. Together they began a lifelong mission to serve others and to tell people about Jesus. A homemaker, she loved her children and grandchildren and rarely missed an event that they were involved in. She prayed for them daily and loved to tell them that, "God has been so good to me." Over the years Hellen was active in all areas of the church. Locally she served as church secretary, taught Sunday School, supervised the teen department for twenty-two years, and worked as both missionary president and adult director. She and Lenard served as co-directors of the Sr. Adult ministries both locally and on the district and were famous for the trips they planned and the banquets they served. She was active in the both the Eastern Oklahoma and the Southeast Oklahoma District Church of the Nazarene, serving at church camp as everything from registrar, to kitchen help, to counselor. She was the District missionary treasurer and served on that board for over thirty years as well as a number of years on the Young Peoples counsel. Hellen loved researching church and family history, getting to know her siblings, and taking get-away trips to Branson, Missouri. She was known for her kindness and her listening ear. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lenard Ray Stubbs, her parents, John Gilbert and Lela Mae Counterman, and eleven brothers and sisters; Bessie, Buss, Madge, Clara, Leatha, Marie, Dudley, Alfred, Juanita, Evelyn and Earl.
