James Edward Leeper, Jr., affectionately known as Sonny, passed away on August 15, 2023, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born on March 16, 1936, in Yukon, West Virginia, he was the beloved son of James Edward Sr. and Clara (Gray) Leeper.
He was a proud veteran, having served in the United States Air Force. His dedication to his country was a testament to his character, demonstrating his commitment to service and duty. Following his military service, James embarked on a fulfilling career as a boxer while serving in the military. Upon discharge, he trained at the Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. He later pursued a career as a Psychiatric Technician at the Boston VA Hospital. His work in this field showcased his compassion and understanding, traits that endeared him to all who knew him.
James was a member of the Baptist community. He was also a pillar of the Graham/Weleetka community for 28 years, earning the affectionate nickname "Mayor of Graham" from those who knew him. His leadership and dedication to his community were evident in his actions and his unwavering commitment to the betterment of those around him.
James had a passion for the outdoors, finding joy in fishing, ranching, and gardening. These hobbies allowed him to connect with nature and provided him with a sense of peace and tranquility. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren. His love for his family was evident in every interaction, and his home was always filled with laughter and love. James was known for his kindness and fairness, but he was also firm when necessary. His balanced approach to life and his unwavering integrity made him a role model for many. His legacy will continue to live on through the values he instilled in his children and grandchildren.
James Edward Leeper, Jr. was a man of honor, faith, and family. His life was a testament to the power of love, commitment, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Sr. and Clara (Gray) Leeper. His memory will be cherished by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
James was a devoted family man, leaving behind his loving wife, Cheryle Leeper of Weleetka, Oklahoma. Their union, which began on July 15, 1995, in Las Vegas, Nevada, was a testament to their enduring love and commitment. He was a proud father to Sheila and Michael Leeper of Kingsport, Tennessee, Gary Leeper of Florida, Linda Brown of Massachusetts, Frank Cruz of Georgia, Carolynn Anderson and Venus Figueroa of Maryland, and Ranado Orduna of Nebraska. James was also a cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, and by one sister, Shirley Donello of Ohio, his legacy will continue to live on through his many descendants.
Viewing will be on Thursday, August 24, 2023 from 3:00 PM till 8:00 PM at Integrity Funeral Service, 410 East Trudgeon Street, Henryetta, Oklahoma 74437.
Funeral services for Mr. Leeper will be on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Integrity Funeral Chapel with Father Robert Duck officiating. Burial will follow the service at Westlawn Cemetery with military honors provided by members of the Tinker Air Force Base honors team in Oklahoma City.
Pallbearers will be John Wolfe, Cole Figueroa, Yonte Orduna, C.J. Harris, Ian Figueroa and Clayton Frias.
