John Alexander Been, a lifetime resident of rural Henryetta, passed away Thursday, August 15th, 2024 at his home at the age of 73. He was born February 22nd, 1951 in Henryetta to Carrol M. Been and Augusta Mae (Hamilton) Been.
He is a graduate of Dewar High School class of 1969. He went on to further his education earning a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma Baptist University. He was a veteran of the Vietnam war serving with the United States Navy. He married Jackie Dickey October 24th, 1969 in Dewar. He was a member of Dewar First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Henryetta Lions Club. John had a unique ability to find humor in life's everyday moments, turning even the mundane into a source of a good joke. You could always count on John to dispense his "wisdom" and he believed whole heartedly that EVERYONE needed his "wisdom" whether you had asked for it or not. Whether through a perfectly-timed joke or a mischievous grin, John had a remarkable knack for lifting spirits and brightening days.
Though he is no longer with us, his legacy of the dumb dad joke will continue to echo in the stories we share and the memories we hold dear. We take solace in knowing that John has left an indelible mark on our lives, reminding us that even in the toughest times, there's always room for a good laugh.
John wrote, "Today I have the final say boys....These past few years have been interesting. On one occasion I was in the hospital with back surgery and found out that I couldn't walk and recovery was going to involve quite a-bit of therapy. I asked God for patience. Wow, he helped me recover. And I've learned that a waking slow helps you observe things around you better. Then this past year I couldn't eat regular food because my taste was distorted by the chemo i was taking. I ask God to restore my taste buds. I lost 70 lbs. Remember, Patience! Remember this, if you want to enjoy life to the fullest...ask for patience. "Things are never so bad that they can't get worse and never so good that they can't get better." Look at how many times Jesus taught this simple lesson to His people." John wanted this included in his obituary so again ... he could dispense his "wisdom."
He is preceded in death by his parents, Carrol and Augusta Been, also by a son, Jared Been.
