Leamiel Vassaur

Shurden Funeral Home 411 West Division Street Henryetta, OK 74437 (918) 652-4461 Fax (918) 652-4451 Leamiel "Lem" Vassaur, a resident of Shawnee and former resident of Henryetta, passed away in Shawnee on February 14, 2013 at the age of 92. Leamiel was born on May 8, 1920 in Delaware, Arkansas to Willie A. Vassaur and Carrie (Horne) Vassaur. Leamiel grew up in Henryetta and attended Henryetta Public Schools, graduating from Henryetta High School. He worked for about one year at Eagle Pitcher Mining and Smelter Company in Henryetta. He joined the U.S. Navy and faithfully served from 1942 - 1945. During that time, Lem served aboard the USS Hamul, a Navy repair ship, where he worked as a metalsmith. While in the service, Lem married the love of his life, Wilma Lucille Barker on December 5, 1944 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. They remained married for 68 years until Wilma's death on October 5, 2012. Following her death, Lem moved to Shawnee to be near his family. Lem and his brother Rosemore, worked pipeline all over the country for many years. He worked for approximately 7 years for NAPA auto parts and later worked for approximately 20 years as the parts manager for Charlie Ruth Ford in Henryetta. Lem retired from Charley Ruth Ford in 1982. Lem and his wife loved to travel and spending time with their family. He was a longtime member of the Henryetta Church of Christ. Leamiel is preceded in death by his mother and father; wife, Wilma Vassaur; 2 brothers, Adair Vassuar and "Red" Vassaur; and 2 sisters, Mabel and Mildred. He is survived by his son, Larry Vassaur and wife Vickey of Shawnee, OK; by three grandchildren, Darren Vassaur and wife Nicci of Oklahoma City, Amy Young and husband Brandon of Shawnee, and Kimberly Sibley and husband William of Oklahoma City; by 4 great grandchildren, Nicholas Vassaur of Oklahoma City, Elizabeth Vassaur of Oklahoma City, Breeana Young of Shawnee and Bryson Young of Shawnee. Viewing and visitation will be held on Saturday, February 16 from 5pm to 8pm and on Sunday, February 17 from noon until 8pm at Shurden Funeral Home. A funeral service for Leamiel will be conducted on Monday, February 18, 2013 at 3:00pm at the Henryetta Church of Christ with Rex Walcher officiating. Interment will follow the funeral immediately at Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home of Henryetta. Pallbearers will be Darren Vassaur, Brandon Young, William Sibley, Nicholas Vassaur, and John Howk
