Lula grew up in Hanna Oklahoma, working on her father’s farm. She was a graduate of Dustin High School. She married her hometown sweetheart, Herbert Pendley, in August, 1950, just before he left to serve in the Korean war. They celebrated 68 wonderful years of marriage before Herbert’s death in 2018. After returning from the military, Lula and Herbert moved to West Texas. Lula obtained her cosmetology license and operated a shop in Garden City, Texas. She also worked for the Garden City School system driving a school bus and assisting in the school cafeteria. Lula was a very talented artist who loved to paint and draw. Her oil paintings exist in many homes of friends and family, churches and businesses. She painted the Garden City school mascot that was center court in the school gym. After many years in Garden City, Lula and Herbert moved to Sterling City, Texas, where Lula worked in the local grocery store until she retired. In 2004, they moved to Cedar Park, Texas to be closer to family.
The last years of her life were difficult. She courageously battled with Alzheimers, and survived an aggressive cancer and surgery. Unfortunately, she could not overcome the COVID pandemic, as it spread within her nursing home. Lula was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved God and taught all of her family the merits of strong morals, hard work, and love of family, community, and country. We will miss her sweet smile, her sense of humor, her delicious pumpkin pies, and precious, loving hugs. We were all blessed to have had her in our lives.
