Matthew Johnson Tiger, known as Matt, and within his immediate family was affectionately called Butch, was a beacon of inspiration and a pillar of strength to all who knew him. Born on July 29, 1947, in Henryetta, Oklahoma, Matt was a vibrant soul who instilled hope, love, and wisdom in the hearts of many through his Ministry. His journey of life concluded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on the morning of Sunday, September 3rd with his loving daughter by his side. His legacy of love, dedication, and service lives on.
Matt was the beloved son of Coody and Lela McNac Tiger, the devoted husband of his late wife Caroline, and a loving father to his late children, Kellie and Terry. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Kenneth and Dean. He is survived by his daughter Zoelynn Olea and husband Teodoro, brother George and wife Frances, grandchildren Chasity Tiger, Tyler Crenshaw, Damon Gunn, Justin Gunn, Jr; Darius Tiger, Brenay Tiger, Renae Tiger, Ayleah Powell, River Landsdale, Topley Powell, Jess Waterdown, Jr, great grandchildren Maya Tiger, Alaina LaSarge, Sierra LaSarge, Tahlee Tiger, Hazel Landsdale, and Courtney Hall. In addition, his nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. His family was the core of his existence, and he lived a life committed to their love and legacy, a testament to his profound resilience and strength.
A graduate of Chilocco Indian School in 1966, Matt's thirst for knowledge led him to further his education at Oklahoma State University IT in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, where he earned an Associate Degree. His academic journey continued at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he diligently pursued his studies.
Matt's professional journey was as diverse and multifaceted as the man himself. As a Comprehensive Planner for Muscogee Nation, Matt was instrumental in shaping the future of his community. His satisfaction was knowing his work would impact and improve lives. He then utilized his knowledge and passion for his culture as a Traditional Language Instructor for the same nation, tirelessly working to preserve and promote the language of his ancestors. Matt served as a Pastor for numerous churches across the country, including the one his father had pastored, spreading love, hope, and faith wherever he went.
Matt was a man of many passions, each of which he pursued with vigor and dedication. His love for sports was evident in his enthusiasm for playing tennis, fast-pitch softball, and basketball. He was seen many times being on the golf course and displaying an infectious smile after a long drive or successful putt. As a lifelong and loyal fan of Oklahoma University football, he never missed a chance to cheer on his team, his spirit as vibrant as the crimson and cream colors of his beloved Sooners.
His interests were not confined to his own pursuits, but extended to the endeavors of his family. A dedicated supporter, Matt was often found at his grandchildren's activities and events, his presence a constant source of encouragement and love. His support was not limited to the sidelines, but extended into every aspect of their lives, instilling in them the values of hard work, perseverance, and love for family.
Matthew Johnson Tiger was not just a man; he was an embodiment of resilience, a testament to the power of love, and an exemplar of unwavering faith. His life was a symphony of love, dedication, and service, each note resonating with the values he held dear. His legacy will continue to inspire, his memory will continue to warm hearts, and his spirit will continue to guide those he left behind. In his own words he would say, "Our journey in this world is about achieving the destination of Eternal Life and a reunion with our loved ones who have gone on before us and about the love we share, the memories we make, and the lives we touch along the way."

A wake service will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at 7:00 PM at Integrity Chapel.
Funeral service is scheduled on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 10:00 AM at the Yardeka Indian Baptist Church south of Henryetta with Reverend Fred Lowe and Norman Daniel officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Yardeka Indian Baptist Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jesse Urbana, Bubba Sanders, Topley Powell, Damon Gunn, Marsey Scott and River Landsdale. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Chief Bill Fife, Speaker Sam Alexander, Dr. James King, Dr. Michael Tosee, Second Speaker Jerry Wilson, Rick Wolfe, President Mitchell Cypress, Representative Mark Randolph, Cecil Harry, Woody Anderson, Moses Jumper, Jr. and Willie Wind.
