Richard Dansby Carter, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2023, in Dewar, Oklahoma. Born on January 4, 1932, in Kinta, Oklahoma, he was 91 years old.
Richard was a man of intelligence, adventure, and intrigue. He was known for his sharp mind, his zest for life, and his unique ability to captivate others with his fascinating life stories. Richard was a pillar of his community, known for his dedication to education and his commitment to improving the lives of those around him.
Richard was married to his loving wife, Erma Carter, in 1954 in Spiro, Oklahoma. Their union was blessed with four children, Carroll Carter and his wife Diane of Henryetta, Alice Ann McGowen and her husband Mike of Dewar, and Eric Carter and his wife Denise of Dewar. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Alice Carter, a son, Phillip D. Carter, and a grandson, Austin Carter.
Education played a significant role in Richard's life. He graduated with his Master's degree from East Central University in Ada. His passion for learning and his commitment to education led him to a fulfilling career in teaching. Richard taught for 32 years until his retirement in 1986. Most of his time teaching was spent at Dewar Public Schools, where he served in a variety of roles, including teacher, bus driver, and Principal. His dedication to his students and his profession left a lasting impact on the community.
Richard was a man of faith and was a member of the Dewar First Baptist Church. His faith guided him throughout his life and provided him with a sense of peace and purpose. He found joy in nature and was an avid golfer and fisherman. He also had a love for baseball and played as a pitcher at Northeastern State College.
Richard's life was a testament to the power of education, the importance of community, and the joy of exploration. He leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, and leadership that will continue to inspire those who knew him. His memory will forever be cherished by his loving family, his dear friends, and the countless students whose lives were touched by his dedication to education.
Richard Dansby Carter will be dearly missed but his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. His life was a beautiful example of a life well-lived. His intelligence, adventurous spirit, and interesting life stories will forever be remembered. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
At the family's request, there will be no formal visitation or viewing at the funeral home. The casket will be present but will remain closed. However, anyone is welcome to stop and sign the guest book and a memorial video will be available to view.
Pallbearers will be, Ryan Carter, Mitch McGowen, Micah McGowen, Ki Fields, Brandon Holland, & Gabriel Hebert.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 1st, 2023 at Dewar First Baptist Church with Rev. Ryan Wells officiating. Interment will follow in New Sonora Cemetery under direction of Integrity Funeral Service.
The family has designated Dewar Education Foundation and Alumni Foundation as appropriate for memorials and donations.
