Sam Frye, Jr., a resident of rural Henryetta, Oklahoma, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 in Tulsa at the age of 94 years. Sam was born on February 22, 1922 in the Salem community to Sam Frye, Sr. and Leechie Taylor. Sam grew up in the Henryetta area attending school in Yardeka and Salem areas.
In November of 1942, Sam joined the U.S. Army. He faithfully served for two years, including a tour of duty in Germany, before his honorable discharge in February of 1944. Sam returned home where he worked as a laborer in several farming locations for most of his adult life. Sam loved to hunt and fish. He was a devoted worker and was proud of his native American traditions. He was a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and took great pride in his military service. He was also active in the Hickory Ground Ceremonial ground and community. Sam was loved and respected by his family and he will be deeply missed.
Sam is preceded in death by his mother and father; by six brothers, Sandy Frye, Sarty Frye, Roman Frye, Noah Frye, Harbie Fry, and Loney Frye; and one sister, Bessie Frye.
He is survived by 11 nieces, Allice Fields, Bertha Frye, Martha Frye, Susie Harley, Anna Kelley, Sally Nusbaum, Mary Frye, Amy Frye, Fannie Frye, Carol Frye, and Freda Fields; by 10 nephews, Mekko Thompson, Tim Thompson, William Frye, Harbie Frye Jr., James Frye, Sam Chubby Frye, Roley Frye, Johnson Frye, Art Powell, and Bobby Frye; by a host of great nieces and great nephews, and three great, great nieces and nephews; other extended family and many good friends.
Viewing for Sam is scheduled for Friday, August 12, 2016 from noon until 8:00pm at Integrity Funeral Service.
A funeral service to honor Sam's life is set for Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 1:00pm at Integrity Chapel with Rev. Amon Harjo and Rev. John Wayne Tulsa officiating. Interment will follow immediately at Frye-Harjo Cemetery, south of Henryetta under the direction of Integrity Funeral Service. Military honors will be provided by Creek Nation Honor Guard at the committal service.
Pallbearers will be Skippy Fields, Johnson Frye, John Frye Jr., Jerry Sumka, and James Frye. Honorary bearers will be George Thompson, Deion Dee, Tim Thompson, Roley Frye, Keith Nusbaum, Harbie Frye Jr., Frank Harley, Roman Powell and Art Powell.
