Shelly Lynn (Stubbs) Crow, a resident of Henryetta, passed away Monday, May 23, 2011 in Tulsa at the age of 63. She was born January 27, 1948 in Henryetta to Everett Walter Stubbs and Doretha Laverne (Beaver) Stubbs. Shelly was a graduate of Daniel Webster High School in Tulsa, class of 1966. Shelly received her associates degree as a registered nurse from Tulsa Junior College. She attended Northeastern University in Tahlequah and received her Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) Degree. She then received her Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Oklahoma. Shelly worked as a registered nurse at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa for several years and later taught nursing at University of Tulsa and Langston University, Tulsa Campus. Later, Shelly was school nurse for Dustin, Ryal, Hanna and Graham public Schools. She married John Crow April 21, 1969 in Eufaula, Oklahoma. She was a member of the Henryetta Church of Christ. Shelly, who was 1/4 Muskogee Creek, served as the only female Second Chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation from 1992 until 1996 under the administration of former Principal Chief Bill Fife. She was of the Tukuputce Tribal Town and the Raccoon Clan. She also served in the office of the Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission and in 1993 and was one of thirty-two full-time health care consultants reporting to and assisting former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in the position of Policy & Evaluation on the Healthcare Reform Taskforce. She testified before Congress on the disparities of American Indian Health issues. These hearings led to self-governance of all Indian Tribes. She participated in a three-year research project focusing on alcoholism within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Findings published by Aspen for use in public health schools and community nursing text books. In memory of their son JOHN CROW IV, she and her husband John began a foundation that worked with rural youth to promote healthy lifestyles and education. She served on the Oklahoma Indian health Service Area Health Board, Muscogee (Creek) Nation Health Board, Claremore Indian Hospital Advisory Board, Appointed to the first HIV/AIDS team by President Reagan, National Rural Health Advisory Board, National Nursing Higher Education Board, Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission, Oklahoma Adolescent Teen Pregnancy Prevention Commission, Oklahoma Area Health Education Advisory Board, Oklahoma Rural Health Board, Tulsa Indian Affairs Commission, Tulsa Human Rights Commission, & Board member of the John Crow IV Memorial Foundation. She is preceded in death by her parents, Everett W. Stubbs & Doretha L. (Beaver) Stubbs, a son, John Crow IV, two sisters, Donna Powders & Barbara Caywood Goodman. Shelly is survived by her husband of 42 years, John Crow of the home One daughter, Leslie Crow of Henryetta Two grandchildren, Morgan Lynn Taylor of Henryetta John Zachary Taylor of Henryetta Also by a host of friends and other relatives. Pallbearers will be Zachary Taylor, Mark Taylor, Alvin Powders, Dennis Powders, Alan Powders, Jason Caywood & Jesse Crow. Honorary Pallbearers will be Principal Chief A. D. Ellis, Second Chief Alfred Berryhill, Former Principal Chief Bill Fife, & Former Principal Chief Perry Beaver. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Church of Christ with Rex Walcher, officiating. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m., Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa under direction of Integrity Funeral Service.
