Vernon Virgil Van Meter, Sr., a longtime resident of Henryetta passed away Tuesday, September 8th, 2015 at his home at the age of 86. He was born August 9, 1929 in Hartshorne, Oklahoma to John VanMeter, Sr. and Fannie (Helm) VanMeter. He married Joyce Walter January 29, 1952 in Van Buren, Arkansas. Vernon was a retired teacher having taught at Henryetta Public Schools and retired as Student Activities Director from Oklahoma State University in Okmulgee. He was a veteran serving with the United States Army. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, Gene, & Clifford VanMeter and by a sister, Shirley Joan VanMeter. He is survived by his wife Joyce of the home; Two sons, Vernon VanMeter, Jr. and wife Patty of Henryetta; Stephen VanMeter of Checotah; Two granddaughters, Stephanie Tomlinson & husband Sean of Choctaw; Karie Dombek of McAlester; Five great grandchildren, Jeffrey Lee Dombek, Jr. of McAlester; Matthew Ryan Dombek of McAlester; Brendan Tomlinson of Choctaw; Alison Dombek of McAlester; Aidan Tomlinson of Choctaw; One sister, Peggy Funk of Oklahoma City; Two Sister's-in-law, Janet VanMeter of Henryetta; Freida West of Okmulgee; A brother-in-law, Gordon Walter of Tulsa; Also by a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives. Visitation will be from 8:00 a.m., Friday until 8:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Dombek, Matthew Dombek, Brendan Tomlinson, Aidan Tomlinson, Sean Tomlinson, Brent Van Meter, & Tripp Funk. Honorary Pallbearers will be Stephen Van Meter, Earl Dickey, Hunk Vercelli, Jeff Dombek Dana Van Meter, Michael Riddlespurger, Randy Griner, Al Petrone, Jim Suiter, Michael Halgarth & Ernie Halgarth. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2015 at First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Lowell Churchill, Rev. Mike Meeks, & Rev. Mike Van Meter, officiating. Interment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery under direction of Integrity Funeral Service.
