Wanda June Pinkston

Wanda June Pinkston, a resident of Okmulgee, passed away Saturday, February 07, 2016 in Okmulgee, OK at the age of 86. She was born February 20, 1929 in Henryetta, OK to William R. Pinkston & Violet (Lamb) Pinkston. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Joe Pinkston, Robert Pinkston, Mike Pinkston, and sister, Pat VanMeter Wanda graduated from Henryetta High School. After working for a year as a civilian clerk- typist in Los Angeles, she graduated from the Los Angeles, Police Academy. She was one of the six women who graduated, she graduated with honors and won the Top Shot award for the class which also included the male graduates. After graduating from Los Angeles Police Academy she became the only female police officer in Culver City, California. She began working with delinquent teenagers and received recognition from school officials as well as civic groups. As a result of her work with delinquent teenagers she was approached by Nicholas Ray and Leon Uris, the writer and director of the movie Rebel Without A Cause for her insight into the lives of juvenile delinquents. She moved up through the ranks and participated in many high profile cases. After returning to Oklahoma she spent many years with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, traveling around the state investigating welfare fraud. Wanda was always extremely patriotic, she loved this country. She was very active in the political process, supporting the military and supporting veterans. Wanda has always been greatly respected and admired by her nieces and nephews for many reasons, one of which is the pride and respect that she demonstrated to this country and the political process. Wanda is survived by her brother, Jerry Pinkston of Henryetta, and by several nieces & nephews. Viewing will be from 5-8pm on Monday, February 8, 2016 at Integrity Funeral Service. A graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 PM, Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Westlawn Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Integrity Funeral Service.
